Stocks Going Ex Dividend in November 2020

The following is a short list of some of the many stocks going ex dividend during the next month.

Many traders and investors use the stock trading technique called ‘Buying Dividends,’ also commonly referred to as ‘Dividend Capture.’ This is the strategy of buying stocks before the ex dividend date and selling the stock shortly after the ex date at about the same price, yet still being entitled to the dividend.

TOP DIVIDEND STOCKS

This technique generally works in bull markets and flat or choppy markets, but you need to avoid the strategy during bear markets. In order to be entitled to the dividend, you have to buy the stock before the ex-dividend date, and you can’t sell the stock until after the ex date.

The actual dividend may not be paid for another few weeks. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has compiled a downloadable and sortable list of the stocks going ex dividend in the near future. The list contains many dividend paying companies, lots with market caps over $500 million, and many with yields over 2%. Here are a few examples showing the stock symbol, the ex-dividend date, the periodic dividend amount.

Intel Corporation (INTC) 11/5/2020 0.33 3.00%
American Electric Power Company, Inc. (AEP) 11/9/2020 0.74 3.27%
Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) 11/10/2020 0.45 2.04%
Target Corporation (TGT) 11/17/2020 0.68 1.76%
CSX Corporation (CSX) 11/27/2020 0.26 1.34%
Coca-Cola Company (KO) 11/30/2020 0.41 3.42%

Payment date: the day on which the dividend payment is actually made, which can be as long at two months after the ex date.

Learn from Howard Schultz, Ron Howard, Steve Martin, Malcolm Gladwell & Other Experts for a Very Low Price

Have you ever wanted to learn more about business and entrepreneurship? How would you like to take a class from Howard Schultz, the former chairman and chief executive officer of Starbucks (SBUX) for many years? Or maybe you want to write your own book. Your teacher can be best selling author of Tipping Point, Blink, and Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell. You might want to learn a little magic for a hobby and have Penn and Teller as your instructor. Or improve your cooking skills with the help of Wolfgang Puck.

How  much would you be wiling to pay for a class from any of these individuals? $500? $1,000? $2,000? They are all available to you, plus many others, through online classes for a very reasonable $180, offered by an innovative company called MasterClass. By the way, that’s not $180 per class, that’s $180 total, all-access for all classes!

I’m trying my best to not make this post sound like a sales pitch, but I signed up for the all-access pass to MasterClass myself, and I’m extremely impressed. MasterClass, based in San Francisco, was founded in 2014. The company offers classes in the areas of business, filmmaking, culinary arts, writing, entertainment, sports, games, and science. It currently offers over 60 classes, taught by experts in their fields.

Here is just a small sample of the instructors:

  • Howard Schultz
  • Dan Brown
  • Malcolm Gladwell
  • James Patterson
  • Gordon Ramsay
  • Wolfgang Puck
  • Ron Howard
  • Martin Scorsese
  • Spike Lee
  • Helen Mirren
  • Steve Martin
  • Diane Von Furstenberg
  • Steph Curry
  • Penn & Teller

There are many, many others. I’ve already taken several classes, and realized that a lot of the advice these instructors give, no matter what their field, can be applied to becoming successful in any type of business. As an example, Academy Award winner Ron Howard teaches a class on directing movies. But from the business standpoint, he teaches, planning, collaboration, and project management.

Currently, MasterClass is offering a $30 credit when you sign up with the following link:

https://share.masterclass.com/x/F1oPRt

This gives you an All-Access pass, allowing you to take any (and even every) course you want for a full year. Think about it. You could watch drivel on TV or watch a MasterClass and learn something useful.

Top 21 Sports Betting Stocks

by Fred Fuld III

Last year, the Supreme Court came out with a decision that would allow betting on sports in all states, with each state determining whether or not to allow this form of gambling. Several have already legalized legalized online sports betting. Almost half the states are considering legislation. This should lead to more online gambling, and a transition from illegal gambling to legal betting.

Even NBC Sports Broadcaster Jim Kozimor mentioned in an interview back in September that sports betting will be an extremely strong growth industry.

So if you are looking for a way to profit from sports betting without betting on stocks, you should look at the stocks that should benefit from the online betting of sports.

FanDuel is the second largest daily fantasy sports provider and is anticipated to be a leader in the legal sports betting market. Thast year, FanDuel was taken over by Paddy Power Betfair (PDYPY), which trades on the London Stock Exchange in Britain and on the Pink Sheets in the US. This $6,6 billion market cap company trades at 20 times forward earnings and pays a favorable yield of 4.2%.

Boyd Gaming Corp. (BYD), an operator of a company that runs 16 casinos across the United States, has recently released its B Connected Sports app in order to take advantage of increased legalization. The stock trades at 29 times  trailing earnings and has a forward price to earnings ratio of 17. It pays a small dividend of 0.8%.

The following is a list of over 20 companies that may benefit from online sports betting.

Company Symbol MktCap Yield
Paddy Power Betfair PDYPY 6.7 B 4.14%
MGM Resorts MGM 14.9 B 1.87%
Gaesar’s Entertainment CZR 6.3 B 0

Dirty Words on Wall Street

by Fred Fuld III

It may be hard to believe, but some of the filings that public companies make to the Securities and Exchange Commission actually contain some dirty words. Occasionally, you may find an “F bomb” or an “S bomb” in one of these documents.

Sometimes the word is a typo, sometimes it is quoting from a conversation, and some times the company really means to say it.

The “F” Bomb

EX-10.8 of 10-Q for Grand Canyon Education Inc. (LOPE) has a list of derogatory domain names that it “purchased as a protective measure.”

This one for City National Bancshares looks like it may be the job of a hacker or maybe an attorney who thought he was sending a text to someone at the time.

Dirty quote in SEC filing

Here is an example of a filing with a quote of “such blasphemy” that someone  said that appears in the Chapman Capital Schedule 13 D from several years ago.

Dirty word SEC filing

The “S” Bomb

A more recent example is Shopify (SHOP). On its Exhibit 1.1 for the Form 40-F [2016 Annual InformationForm], the “S” word is shown in the Culture & Employees section.

Shopify

LendingClub (LC) has what appears to be a typo for an occupation on its Form 424B3. Doesn’t sound like a job anyone would want.

LendingClub

These are just a few examples. If you have a lot of free time on your hands, I’m sure you can find more.

1st Hand Review of 1st Amazon Bookstore in SF Bay Area

It was just three days ago that Amazon (AMZN) opened up its first bookstore in the San Francisco area. In case you haven’t heard, Amazon is giving Barnes & Noble (BKS) a (bigger) run for its money, by opening up bricks and mortar establishments, better known as retail stores.

The shop that I visited is located in Walnut Creek, California, a fairly wealthy suburb near San Francisco, just a 40 minute ride on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit).

In spite of the fact that Amazon is headquartered in the state of Washington, only two Amazon Books stores are located there, yet there are now four in California. The other three are in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Jose. The rest are located in Oregon, New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, and New Jersey.

The store I visited is located at 1265 Broadway Plaza and is a little hard to find, but if you can find the kate spade shop, it is next door. And if you can find the Tesla (TSLA) store, it is across the street. The first thing I noticed was that the place was packed. Of course, the space wasn’t as big as the two-story building Barnes & Noble had occupied when they were located in Walnut Creek, but they had shut down in January of last year.

I noticed all the usual categories for books that you would find in any decent size bookstore, but there were a few new ones, such as The Books with Over 10,000 Reviews. Included in that section were the following books:

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson

What Happened by Hillary Rodham Clinton

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari

In addition, there were the usual non-book Amazon products for sale, such as the Kindle, the Echo, and other Alexa devices.

There was also a Peet’s Coffee located within the store, for shoppers who were thirsty, hungry, or both.

On display at the very front of the store, was a group of books called Most Wished-For Books. Included was the book, The Rooster Bar by John Grisham.

One book had a whole display all to itself right by the front door: Turtles All the Way Down by John Green.

All in all, it was a fun adventure to see what was being offered and how strong the patronage was. It will be interesting to see where the next shop will open, and how many more Amazon Books shops there will be.

On Sale Business and Financial Books

The following business and finance Kindle books are currently on sale at Amazon (AMZN). If you are interested in any of these books, you should order them as soon as possible, because often these sales only last for just a couple days.
